The Case IH Maxxum 145 Multicontroller has received media attention since it produced the best fuel economy for a four-cylinder tractor ever seen in the DLG Powermix tests last year – almost 9.5% below its nearest competitor. A key factor in the result was the tractor’s ActiveDrive 8 double clutch transmission, a new 24 x 24 semi-powershift which provides eight powershift steps in each of three ranges, both forward and reverse.
Covering speeds up to 10.7kph, range one is specifically designed for heavier draft work. Range two, the main working range, covers nearly 90% of all fieldwork and loader applications, allowing operators to work under full load, with no torque disruption, from 4.3-18.1kph. For road travel, the transmission is designed to start in range three, and a skip-shift function allows the operator to quickly progress through the powershift speeds. An auto shift feature also means that the tractor can be set to progress automatically through all 16 gears in the top two ranges.
Because clutching is necessary only for range changes, the ActiveDrive 8 is suited to power-hungry tasks where maintaining momentum is critical, such as cultivations or operating large mowers, meaning practically all field operations can be carried out without having to cut power to the wheels. The machine also features Active Clutch II – a unique feature which allows operators to stop the tractor without de-clutching – and shifting and shuttle response can be modulated according to the task in hand.

The Maxxum 145 Multicontroller with ActiveDrive 8 was also crowned Tractor of the Year 2019 and Best Design of the Year 2019 at EIMA International in November 2018. The winning model will be on display throughout the Royal Highland Show in the Technical Innovations Area.
