TOMRA FOOD BECOMES THE CENTER OF ATTRACTION WITH ITS SORTING TECHNOLOGIES AT GULFOOD 2019

TOMRA Food showcased its most advanced grading, sorting and peeling technologies at Gulfood Manufacturing 2019, the biggest food industry event in the Middle East, Asia and Africa region.

Offering sensor-based sorting machines and solutions, TOMRA Food supports food manufacturers to increase their efficiency, achieve higher-quality products, minimize product waste and maximize profits.

Thanks to minimum product waste and uninterrupted operation, the TOMRA 5B sorter, one of the prominent products at the exhibition, offers high operational efficiency and final product quality. These benefits are made possible by three key features: superior performance, improved ease of use and hygienic design. The TOMRA 5B combines TOMRA’s smart surround view technology with 360 degrees inspection for the highest performance. The technology features high-resolution cameras for detailed product appearance as well as high-intensity LEDs that offer improved light intensity. With these features, the TOMRA 5B ensures reduced false rejection rates and improves product quality with color, shape detection and foreign material removal.

The Nimbus BSI+ sorting machine not only identifies foreign materials but also product-specific defects

With advanced BSI+ technology, the Nimbus BSI+, developed for products such as nuts, dried fruits, grains and seeds, detects not only foreign materials but also visual irregularities by identifying product-specific defects.

The BSI+ module detects product defects using both near infrared and visible spectrum wavelengths for highly detailed classification capabilities. The BSI+ module identifies product defects that are visible and invisible to the human eye using the near infrared spectrum. This feature makes TOMRA the market leader in detecting defects such as insect bites, rotten products, discoloration, and shriveled and moldy grains in nuts, peanuts, almonds and other nuts.

Drawing attention to the change in the supply-demand balance in food supply due to population growth and, therefore, the necessity to use resources more effectively, Knopfmacher explained; “The global population is forecast to increase from 7.6 billion to 10 billion people by 2050, and in many places food demand is already outstripping supply. To illustrate the rapid pace of change, agricultural demand today is 50% greater than it was just five years ago. This is placing an enormous strain on agricultural resources because the land available for growing food is becoming increasing limited. Some 54% of this waste is lost in upstream processes, resulting from inefficiencies in developing countries during harvesting, post-harvest handling, and processing, and the other 46% is wasted in consumption chain in developed nations,” and explained: “As a leading provider of integrated post-harvest solutions to the global fresh produce industry, TOMRA Food is acutely aware of the issue surrounding food waste and continues to deliver solutions. We work closely with farmers, processors and retailers to tackle the issue.
